What FIFA 12 Taught Me About Apparel Design.

Most product teams don’t see a critical flaw until the physical sample lands. By then, weeks are gone. Thousands of dollars too.

Years ago at Puma, i noticed non-creative teams found it hard to read the sketches. They struggled to see the vision in flat 2D lines.

Frustrated, I looked outside our bubble.

Then, the Newcastle United kit I designed got built into FIFA 12.

Seeing my physical work brought to life in a virtual world flipped a switch. I studied how gaming engines built those 3D player models. I taught myself 3D software working at home.

Brought that thinking straight into the design room.

We started figuring out design problems on a screen, not the factory floor.

The result?

-Faster buy-in.

-Prototyping cycles cut in half.

-Less wasted fabric.

-Zero factory drift.

3D isn’t just a pretty visual.

It’s how you figure out blind spots before production.

It locks the design before sampling.

How is your team using 3D to kill blind spots?
